“Bad to The Bone” – One Light Session with Gregor

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Yesterday I had an interesting session that I planned a long time ago. We arrived at my friends house, he has a very cool location at his back yard including old cellar and a rotting shed. I planned to shoot some gangster style pictures and at the end just for fun, make some insane pics with welding glasses and a mask.

You can find more photos on my Flickr page.

Winter session IV (Anna)

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

So I decided to grab the winters tail and shoot one more session this winter. It was a sunny day 15:30, the sun was setting down, and we stopped not far from a TV tower and made our photo shoot.

So what did I learn from that session.
Once again, don’t make photo sessions when it’s cold and windy. Your brain freezes along with your body and you can’t think straight.

Vintage travelers

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Today I had a really interesting session with my good friends. I decided to make a retro style photos, something in retro train travelers style. So I searched my grandfathers country garret for props or stuff I can use for this session and found two vintage suitcases, just like in 50’s people used to travel with. We picked a nice location not far from my apartment, with railroad tracks and train hangars. As the weather was not so warm we were shooting for an hour or so, made some series of classic shots like “going away”, “catch that train” and other.

Autumn photo session

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

This autumn I decided not to go shooting landscapes, but to make a portrait session with my wife and sister. So we went to Sigulda, it’s a beautiful place in Latvia, it was an overcast day so the shadows was soft and smooth. Had some good time shooting. I also shot film with my Lubitel 166, didn’t finish the film so I’ll share those photos later.

My first One Light experience

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Last week I attended a seminar about “One Light Photography”. It was a 6 hour long lecture and practice. The professional photographer showed us how to make cool high-class photos using only 1 light and the available lighting. It really inspired me and today I decided to try some techniques I learned on the seminar, so let’s see the results.

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Today I want to share some basic portrait setups. These setups don’t require expensive equipment or fancy techniques. All you need is a softbox or umbrella, fill cards, and some strobes.

Why should I choose longer lenses for portrait works ?

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

I always wanted to know why professional photographers always use longer lenses like 70-200 or 90 for portrait shooting. Mark Wallace from studiolighting.net gave the answer on this question.

I favor longer lenses for portrait work for several reasons:
