DIY Briese like studio lighting

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Ever wonder how magazine like photos are taken? Check out this simple DIY Briese like reflector, you can make some cool beauty style head shots with it. This is probably not the best example, and the parabolic reflectors are generally much larger than this one. But you might understand that just an ordinary cardboard reflector with aluminum foil pasted on the reflecting side, can produce pretty good results.

Cactus V2s Modification

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

After the last session I was really pissed off about my Cactus V2s trigger. Every time I moved the flash tripod my flash was falling down because the screw on the trigger was loose, I tried to tighten it up but it was no use, the plastic was rubbed off there and it slips down very easy. So I came up with this idea.

1. Drill a hole in the metal bracket 5mm in diameter.
2. Stick the screw in the whole and tighten the nut.
3. You are ready to fire !

So you have 2 holes to screw in, and you can change it any time you need. Pretty easy and fast to make.

DIY iPhone Macro Lens

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Some long time ago I saw a post on DIYphotography “Super Macro Your Cellphone Camera With A DVD Lens“, and I decided to try and make the same thing only with the laser pen I’ve got dusting around for quite a while. I made a step by step tutorial how to make a macro lens for iPhone or any other cellphone as well.

1. Get yourself a laser pen.

DIY matchbox pinhole camera

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Today I decided to make a matchbox pinhole camera. Not so complicated, I used only an empty matchbox, a lot of black tape, empty film canister and an aluminum square I cut from a beer can with a pinhole. And that’s my pinhole camera.

The process

Small strobe with studio softbox

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

For some time I tried to think how can I combine a studio softbox and a small studio flash. Today I found a good tip how to use a studio softbox with a small camera flash Yanik’s Photo School demonstrates how you can make your own flash rig using standard studio equipment, it’s really easy. Only one more thing I want to figure out is how can I use my studio reflectors with my small flash. If you have any suggestions drop a comment.

DIY gridspot for Bowens

Friday, March 27th, 2009

When I’ve got my Bowens kit I had just 1 reflector, umbrella and a softbox. After some time shooting I realized that I need a gridspot, so I went to a photo store with my kit reflector. The salesmen said that they don’t have the grid for my kind of reflector and also my reflector doesn’t support gridspots. He suggested me a reflector with a gridspot for $100.

The Ultimate Bounce Card

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

This is “The Ultimate Bounce Card” by Peter Gregg. This guy sells hand made bounce cards and shows how to make and use them. I found it pretty cool to share your techniques and hand made equipment that everyone can make at home with a piece of white and black paper and a rubber band. Watch the video and make one ! You need this stuff.

You can also find more videos or buy bounce cards at Peter Gregg’s website: www.abetterbouncecard.com

sb 600 gel diagram1 300x278 Nikon SB 600 color gel printing diagram

Not long ago I bought a new flash Nikon SB-600 and a pack of color gels. I surfed the net for a solution how to mount gels on a flash, found some ways but my gels was too big for DIY mounting racks I found, so then I saw an article “DIY 580ex color gels printing diagram“, it inspired me to make a printing diagram for my flash. I spend some time measuring my flash head and draw a sketch in Illustrator. Then I printed it and tried to mount on my flash, it fits perfectly.
