Basic Portrait Lighting Diagrams
Today I want to share some basic portrait setups. These setups don’t require expensive equipment or fancy techniques. All you need is a softbox or umbrella, fill cards, and some strobes.
01 figure

This image shows the usage of the main light. The light source is a middle softbox that is situated at a 45 degree angle to the model. These lighting setup helps achieve the good light painting on the right side of the model.
02 figure

This shot was made using main light and fill light. The fill light is situated at the left side of the model for lighting her face, hair and body.
03 figure

This shot was made using main, fill and back lights with a grid filter to make a circle spot on the background. Blue gel on the back light helps to increase the intensity of the back light.
04 figure

This is also 3 light setup, plus a hair light mounted on a boom stand right above the model’s head. This light creates highlights on hair and brings more life to the shot and also spills on her jacket bringing in the details.
Setups where taken from “Complete Guide To Beauty & Glamour Photography by Jon Gray” book.
